HELP FOR WILDLIFE
The work carried out by the Renewal Project helps to protect and improve the environment for a wide range of animals, birds, plants and river invertebrates.
As well as ducks, swans and brown trout, the river Lambourn is home to some rare species of fish such as bullheads and brook lamprey. Sightings of water vole and an otter have also been reported.
CLEAN RIVERS
Chalk rivers should have clean and clear water with high levels of oxygen. The gravel that makes up the riverbed provides an ideal environment for brown trout and grayling to lay their eggs and the oxygen-rich water allows the eggs to develop. The conditions also encourage a diverse range of plants and insects.
The river Lambourn is one of only 200 chalk streams worldwide. It has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) as it is a nationally important habitat due to the diverse ecology it supports.
